The 7 Best Light Therapy Masks for Combatting Acne, Wrinkles, and More

It’s time to get lit.

TL;DR

Popping on an at-home LED face mask does more than just make you look like a Power Ranger. These mega-popular at-home devices offer a litany of various benefits for your skin, depending on the wavelength (color) used. For example, red light triggers cells to produce more energy, fueling cell turnover and renewal, explains board-certified dermatologist Jessica Weiser, M.D. Blue light is antimicrobial and can help destroy acne-causing bacteria, she adds. All that being said, at-home LED masks aren’t as powerful/won’t give you the same results as an in-office treatment, nor are they a swap for an effective skincare product protocol. But using a good one regularly can definitely play an important part in your overall skincare routine.

The only problem: There are more options out there than ever before. So we tested 20 top-rated, at-home LED masks for two months, or 390 collective hours, evaluating each on the skin concerns it targets, ease of use, effectiveness, design, comfort, and changes in skin texture. We also consulted board-certified, top derms for their input and general advice on best practices. Here are the seven best at-home LED light therapy masks for all skin conditions.

  • How Do LED Masks Work?

“LED masks work by sending light waves deep into the skin to trigger natural intracellular reactions,” explains dermatologic surgeon Dendy Engelman, M.D. The light waves penetrate the layers of the skin to help with cell turnover, which can, in turn, improve certain skin conditions, such as acne, fine lines, and skin tone.

  • What to Look For

    • Design: When shopping for an at-home LED face mask for light therapy, consider the type of device best suited to your lifestyle—this will help you stick with it, and that’s super important, since consistency is key. If you plan on integrating it into your nighttime routine, a strap-on LED mask for the face and neck might be your best bet since all you have to do is put it on and sit (or lie) down. Cordless, hands-free options are great if you want to multitask.
    • Lights: Light features matter, especially when it pertains to your skincare concern and how much you want to experience LED light therapy benefits. Blue LED light therapy is great for acne, since the wavelengths help kill the bacteria that cause breakout. Red light therapy for skin, on the other hand, treats signs of aging and helps balance out an uneven skin tone. Some LED facial masks on this list have red light features, while others have a combination of blue and red light therapy.
    • Bulbs: In related news, Dr. Weiser says it’s also important to check how many light bulbs the mask has. “LED efficacy is primarily related to the bulb count,” she explains. “Masks with higher bulb counts and placement over areas like around the mouth and around the eyes are preferable because they’re targeting areas of the face that tend to age more rapidly.”
    • Settings and Features: You should consider each device’s LED mask setting option, since some masks offer varying intensities, says Dr. Engelman. “These allow you to customize your LED therapy to your own skin,” she explains. As for timing, most masks have timers that will shut off when the session is complete, while others have notification sounds that let you know how much time has passed.
  • How We Tested

    Byrdie

The LED masks were tested over three months to evaluate both short-term and cumulative results with consistent use. Testers incorporated each mask into their regular skincare routines, typically using them multiple times per week (or daily, depending on the device). They assessed ease of use, effectiveness, design and value. They also commented on comfort and how realistic the treatments were to maintain long-term.

Effectiveness was evaluated based on gradual changes in skin concerns like fine lines, tone, texture, redness, and breakouts, noting when results appeared and whether they improved or plateaued over time. Testers also continued their usual skincare products after using the masks (e.g., retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids) to reflect real-world use. Finally, they considered whether the results and experience justified the price and if they would continue using the device after the test.

For anyone looking for a mask that offers a variety of benefits (and then some), this is truly a foolproof pick. It features red, blue, and infrared lights; the pre-set, 12-minute treatment cycles through each of these, although you can also use them individually for four minutes at a time. It helps combat fine lines, acne, and dark spots, and our tester noticed a particular improvement in skin tone and overall brightness. It’s comfortable and easy to use, and also boasts built-in eye protection, one of our tester’s favorite attributes. Dr. Weiser raves about this mask too, calling out the full face coverage, high bulb count, and different wavelengths used. FYI, there’s also a vibrating/massage feature, although it can easily be turned off (which our tester chose to do).

  • Tester Quotes

Rachel, tester with normal skin and fine lines: “This is the best mask I’ve used. I’m loving the results—I noticed an improvement in overall skin tone—and I love the eye protection.”

Unlike the hard plastic most other LED masks are made of, this one is made of a flexible silicone, ensuring it works with the contours of your face. “This offers good face coverage, including the periorbital and perioral areas,” says Dr. Weiser.  (Our tester noted that it did fit and stayed on quite well, so much so that she could even walk around during the 10-minute treatment period. However, she did call out that a slightly larger opening around the mouth would have made it more comfortable for this area.) With red and two different infrared wavelengths, this offers a variety of anti-aging benefits, from combatting inflammation and dullness to improving skin tone. We did in fact see improved clarity and texture; our tester also called out that she felt like her skincare products worked better on the days she used this mask.

  • Tester Quotes

Cher Checchio, senior copy editor with dry/sensitive skin and fine lines, dullness, and uneven skin tone: “The design covers your full face, so it supports key areas from your forehead and cheeks to your nose and chin. And it’s really hard to beat the collagen boosting, fine line-reducing, skin-tightening benefits.”

This winner is a true standout for those concerned about signs of aging: wrinkles, dullness, redness, and more. First and foremost, our tester raved about the comfy design; it’s another silicone option that both fits perfectly across the face and is also super lightweight and non-bulky. Hit the (one) power button and let the four different youth-boosting wavelengths—including amber, which isn’t super common in many LED masks—do their thing in just three minutes. Despite the speedy session, the results are still legit. Our tester said her skin looked overall better after just a few weeks of consistent use.

  • Tester Quotes

Lauren, tester with combination skin and fine lines, dullness, and laxity: “Around three weeks in, I noticed my skin—especially around my cheekbones looked brighter and bouncier. Light reflected better, makeup went on smoother, and my skin overall looked brighter. It’s a great value for something that most people will be able to use without drama since it’s easy to wear, turn on, etc. And three minutes is nothing. I am a busy working mom, and I made time for it.”

  • Product Details

This crowd-favorite mask offers the best of all the LED light therapy worlds, utilizing red, blue, and infrared wavelengths. There are a variety of pre-programmed treatments to choose from, which use these different lights for different amounts of time. (It sounds a little confusing, but we found it very easy to use, particularly thanks to the included remote control.) Our tester chose the anti-aging treatment and saw fewer, softer fine lines after about six weeks. But perhaps most unique is the inclusion of an under-eye cooling feature, a huge win in our book. The only drawback? A slightly bulkier, heavier design makes it a little tricky to multitask while wearing this.

  • Tester Quotes

Anna Traver, writer with oily skin and fine lines: “I started noticing changes about six weeks into testing, when the fine lines on my forehead started to look softer. Results improved with continued use. I will definitely continue using this long-term because I’m very curious to see how much of a difference it can make in a year from now. I do think it’s worth the price because of the cooling, under-eye feature and its super easy-to-use remote control.”

Even though this has red and amber wavelengths (for treating wrinkles and redness, respectively), it was the acne-fighting blue light that really impressed us with this mask. Our tester called out an improvement in blemishes and even cystic acne after the testing period.  Also noteworthy: The mask stays on the face via built-in glasses, which our tester found made this super comfortable to wear for the duration of the 15-minute treatment. It covers the forehead and upper cheeks well, although it doesn’t extend to the super far side of the cheeks, however.

  • Tester Quotes

Surfina, tester with oily skin and cystic acne: “My blemishes vanished. It helped slightly with cystic acne as well; some of the bumps were less noticeable and smaller.”

Choose from red, blue, or a combination of red and blue lights with this mask. Either way, the treatment takes only three minutes, a boon for those who like their skincare speedy. Our tester noted that it helped make her complexion look more even and improved texture, although she did lament that it didn’t help a ton with hormonal acne. While it is on the pricier side, it’s worth mentioning that it does come with a one-year warranty and is HSA/FSA covered.

  • Tester Quotes

Samantha, tester with combo skin and fine lines: “It eliminates the need for serums and other types of products. My wrinkles, which are really fine lines, are practically gone. I love this device.”

With a totally hands-free device (there’s not even a cord), you can easily pop this on and watch TV, do yoga, vacuum, take your choice. Our tester loved that the red light left her complexion more luminous and radiant—even after just one use. It didn’t necessarily improve dark spots, but the combination of red and infrared wavelengths is still effective.

  • Do LED light therapy masks really work?

According to Dr. Engelman, LED light therapy masks can effectively target various skin concerns from aging to acne. “Depending on the wave of light, the skin has different reactions, and therefore, different results can be achieved,” she explains.

  • How do you use an LED therapy mask?

“Clean your face first, then turn the mask on to your desired wavelength, and leave it on for the recommended amount of time. This will differ by the type of mask, but typically, treatment times are between 15 and 30 minutes,” says Dr. Engleman. Overall, she recommends six to eight treatments for the best results. Dr. Weiser underscores the importance of consistency.

  • What does red light therapy do for skin?

If signs of aging are your primary concern, Dr. Engelman says to look for a mask that offers red light. Red light has powerful age-fighting benefits, such as strengthening cellular structure, reducing inflammation, minimizing the appearance of pores, and accelerating repair. This wavelength is also ideal for stimulating collagen and elastin production for smoother, less wrinkled skin.

  • What does blue light therapy do for skin?

“Blue LED is an antimicrobial wavelength,” says Dr. Weiser, adding that it destroys acne-causing bacteria. Additionally, it’s been shown to reduce the redness and swelling of inflammatory blemishes, she adds.

  • Are LED light therapy masks safe?

Dr. Engelman says that LED light therapy masks are also considered safe for most users, except for those who are photosensitive or have certain connective tissue conditions such as lupus. “There is no direct skin contact, and the wavelengths of light do not cause burns, so these therapies are completely painless for many patients,” she adds. That being said, it is important to consider that LED can be damaging to the eyes, cautions Dr. Weiser, making proper eye protection crucial.
