TL;DR

Hair removal can be a frustrating, irritating (literally and figuratively), and costly experience—but for many, shaving is part of their weekly shower routine. To make the experience go smoother, it’s important to choose the right razors (and shaving creams) that minimize irritation, including razor burn, ingrown hairs, and cuts. That’s why we set out to find the best options available, testing more than 20 razors over a month on all parts of the body, including the legs, underarms, arms, and bikini area.

We used each razor several times a week and evaluated for ease of use, durability, and overall performance. Our testers kept detailed notes to determine which ones truly delivered the closest, smoothest shave without damaging the skin, and we narrowed the list down to the top winners.

What We Like
  • Provides a close and smooth shave

  • Razor blades hold up well against dulling and rust

  • Luxe feel

What to Consider
  • Weighted razor may feel heavy to some

Handle Material: Metal | Number of Blades: 1 | Color Options: 4

This metal-weighted razor was voted best overall due to its design, which allows it to glide smoothly along the curves of your body, removing both dead skin and hair. The weight allows you more control when shaving and helps minimize slipping. The curved head of the razor is specifically designed to help shave underarms, making it ideal for sensitive areas like the pubic area. A bonus? This razor is powder-coated, which means it won’t rust when it comes into contact with water.

Rachel, tester: “The shave with the Hanni razor was extremely close and smooth. I didn’t experience any tugging, pulling, or skipping, but you need to ensure you’re getting every inch. It took one pass per section to get a clean shave, and my skin was left feeling exceptionally smooth.”

What We Like
  • Affordable kit comes with a razor handle, two blades, and a magnetic holder

  • Glides easily across the skin

  • Curved handle is easy to grip

What to Consider
  • Replaceable head tends to pop off

Skip the shave gel with this razor; its moisture bars are packed with shea butter, aloe, and coconut, and are activated by just adding water. It’s an excellent option for anyone wanting to protect their skin while shaving, as it reduces the risk of cuts or nicks without requiring shaving cream. Shea butter helps heal irritation, while aloe and coconut soothe and nourish dry skin. Equipped with four sharp stainless steel blades, you’re guaranteed a smooth shave that leaves your skin feeling great. Another added feature? This razor comes with a shower holder, providing the perfect space to keep your razor within easy reach.

Hannah, tester: “My typical razors need a replacement after three to four uses. However, I’ve used this one five times and have just noticed a little dulling. This shave was truly one of the best I’ve had in a while. My skin felt incredibly smooth even before I applied moisturizer!”

What We Like

  • Provides a close shave with minimal nicks

With three razors in a pack and anti-slip technology, it’s the upgrade for your disposable razor you didn’t know you needed.

Bianca, tester with coarse hair: “The shave with their razor was very close and smooth without ever nicking my skin! There was no tugging, but I did have to do a couple of passes on my arm hair to get a clean shave. My skin felt so smooth and hydrated after shaving.”

What We Like
  • Comes with three razors

  • Contours well to areas like armpits and legs for easy navigation

  • Easy to maneuver

Voted best pack for a reason (you get three razors at an affordable price), the razor features three blades and a moisture strip, leaving your skin soft to the touch with minimal irritation. While most disposable razors are typically good for up to three uses, our tester noted this razor was still going strong after five shaves. With bright, colorful packaging, your shaving routine just got a lot more fun!

What We Like
  • Has an extra-long handle

  • Easy to clean in between shaves

  • Plastic-free and reusable

What to Consider

Think of this razor as a visually pleasing addition to your shower; it looks incredibly stylish and certainly deserves the title of best aesthetic design. The plastic-free reusable design allows you to practice sustainability by lessening the amount of razors you dispose of over time—which is a win for both you and the environment.

Kelsey, tester: “The sleek and aesthetic design is probably the best quality of this razor. The underside of the razor had slits, which made rinsing and cleaning the blade between shaves very easy.”

What We Like
  • Has a combination of a razor and a trimmer in one

  • Skin is quite moisturized after just one use

  • Razor doesn’t dull easily

What to Consider
  • The razor comes with no replacement heads

Handle Material: Plastic | Number of Blades: 5 | Color Options: 1

This razor has the benefits of a hydrating shave and trimmer in one, making it the best multiuse option. The trimmer can be used on both wet and dry skin, and it features a four-setting adjustable comb for trimming different hair lengths on and around the bikini area. The trimmer is battery-powered and comes with one battery, so you’ll need to replace that battery once it’s run its course. The razor head is infused with a moisturizing serum that keeps the skin hydrated for up to two hours after shaving—leaving skin looking glossy and smooth to the touch.

Ashley, tester: “This razor is comfortable to use and glides well along all surfaces. The handle is slightly thicker than most standard razors, which helps provide more control over slippage. The blade head had zero mobility issues, and the razor was easy to clean thoroughly after each use. The razor head did include a moisturizing strip, which helped the shaving process and left my skin feeling extra smooth and shiny.”

What to Look for When Buying Razors

  • Number of Blades: Generally, razors with more blades tend to cover larger surface areas and get a closer shave quickly. With several blades, the first one pulls the hair back, and the rest cut the hair and shave the skin, which can lead to ingrown hairs and irritation. Single-blade razors tend to cut the hair without shaving the skin; however, be aware that using a single-blade razor requires some practice to avoid cutting yourself.
  • Handle: Razor handles can be made of plastic, aluminum, steel, or other metals and often feature rubberized components for improved grip. Licensed aesthetician Jodi Shays says a razor’s grip is essential, as it prevents the razor from slipping out of your hands while shaving, which can cause nicks in the skin. She adds that an ergonomic handle is ideal, as it’ll feel more comfortable in your hand while reducing strain at various angles. Better still, look for a razor with a weighted handle for ultimate balance and control—this will also be helpful if you have shaky hands.
  • Additional Features: Some razors come with extra features that may be important, such as a lubricating strip, an ergonomic head, or multiple replacement blades. It’s best practice to think of what might benefit you personally the most while shopping for a new razor.

How We Tested Razors

We believe in using the products we recommend, which is why we prioritize testing products in our daily lives.

  • Number of Products Tested: 8
  • Testing Period: 30 days
  • Methodology: Over 30 days, our testers used each razor on all areas, including the bikini, underarms, arms, and legs, multiple times per week in their homes. They tested each razor thoroughly to see how well the blades held up, the ergonomic design, whether the razor allowed for nicks and cuts, and how the skin felt and looked after each use. Razors were used in conjunction with shaving products on both wet and dry skin to assess their functionality.
  • Considered: We evaluated each razor based on design, ease of use, blade strength, moisture benefits, and suitability for all skin types.
FAQ
  • What types of razors are best for sensitive skin?

“The best types of razors for sensitive skin are those designed to minimize friction, reduce irritation, and provide a close shave,” explained board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nazanin Saedi, M.D. “I suggest avoiding cheap disposable razors and shaving with dry skin, as this can increase the risk of irritation. It’s beneficial to look for razors with pivoting heads, allowing you to move around the contours of the legs or other areas being shaved.” Dr. Saedi also explained the benefits of hypoallergenic blades, “You can also look for hypoallergenic blades and coating. Certain brands have razors specifically designed for sensitive skin. If a cartridge or gel surrounds the blades, ensure it is a nonirritating agent. Too many blades can tug the skin and cause razor bumps.”

  • What’s the best way to shave?

“Techniques that I tell my patients to use when shaving are to use a shaving cream or gel to reduce irritation,” says Dr. Saedi. For individuals with sensitive skin, it’s essential to select a product that’s fragrance-free and nonirritating. You do want to shave with the grain. Avoid using dull blades because they can drag and cause more irritation. I don’t typically recommend using more than five blades because that leads to more passes over the skin, which can be irritating in return.”

  • What parts of the body are safe to shave with a razor?

Aesthetician Joshua Ross says razors can be used anywhere on your body to remove excess hair. This includes your feet, toes, stomach, back, arms, hands, and face, in addition to more obvious areas such as your legs, armpits, and bikini area. Keep in mind that some models or head attachments are better suited for specific areas than others.

  • How often should one shave with a razor?

According to Ross, razors can be used daily, as long as shaving this frequently doesn’t irritate your skin. “However, this depends on the rate of hair growth, which is unique for every single person,” he tells Byrdie. “Some people need to shave daily, depending on the body area, while others may only need to shave once a week.”

  • What are the best razor blades for a close shave?

The best razor blades for a close shave are typically multi-blades on a razor with a pivoting head, which allows you to move the blades around the contours of your body and remove all unwanted hair—even in hard-to-reach-areas.
