Listen up class: We are gathered here today to discuss the best short press-on nails. But before we do so, let us first consult the ancient texts for some important context. Please open your books to Showtime’s "The L Word" Season 1 Episode 3, just over 10 minutes in. As we watch the girl gang test Dana’s “gaydar,” resident heartbreaker Shane McCutcheon’s first parameter for analyzing female queerness is “Look at her fingernails. Are they long or short? Polished or natural?” Now, let me be clear, as much as I love it, the 2004 lesbian drama is often reductive and hyper-generalized, but there is occasionally some truth to it, and while our understanding of queerness today is much more nuanced than it was back then—short nails does not a lesbian make!—there is a fascinating historical relationship between lesbians and their manicures.

Fast forward to today, where I, a self-proclaimed femme lesbian beauty editor, am sitting in my room surrounded by boxes and boxes of press-on nails, all of which I’ve hand-tested (pun intended) against my very gay day-to-day. Here’s my sitch: I love having my nails done, but I loathe getting them done, so I’ve long been a press-on lover, but I’ve often struggled to find press-ons that are 1. Actually cute (why do so many brands think short = square, French and clunky??) 2. Durable and 3. Short enough to accommodate my lifestyle.

Rest assured, though, I’ve done all the heavy lifting, and whether you’re a gay girlie looking for short press-ons that will make it all the way through date night or you just prefer a cropped length for your everyday, here is my definitive list of the best short press-on nails.

Quickies Micro Press-On Nails

Quickies

I would be remiss not to kick off with the brand that introduced me to the world of press-ons made for people like me. Created by fellow queer woman Bailey Stanworth, Quickies is the only brand I’ve found that has not one but three different subcategories of short nails: Short, Mini, and Micro. I started off with the Minis which I still love, but the Micros have been a game changer for me, and this Star-Crossed pattern is absolutely to die for—serving Young Miko realness. They also have tons of longer options that are perfect for mix-and-matching if you want to opt for the classic three long, two short mani.

Nail Thoughts Press On Nails

I’d like to take this moment to address what I’ve found to be a large misconception in the lesbian sex discourse. If your goal is to have lesbian-friendly nails, I’d like to argue that they don’t have to be absolutely miniscule. In my experience (and it varies person to person, of course), a short oval nail is totally fair game. I love Nail Thoughts’ solid colors because they’re ultra glossy and look like real gel, which can be hard to find, but they also have lots of fun patterns and textures. The Tortoiseshell style is another favorite of mine.

ImPress Color Press-Ons

Impress

Whether you got a last minute invite to a chic event or you totally forgot you scheduled that Hinge date for tonight (just go, it’s good for the plot!), these glue-free press-ons will have you looking like a baddie in a pinch. I love the All Black option for when I’m trying to serve “she’s so mysterious and elusive” at the function, and the peel and press application is just what I need when I’m in a rush.

I have tried a lot of press-ons in my day, and I can say with full confidence that Celebritips Salon U-ltimate press-ons are some of the most natural-looking and longest lasting options on the market today. Another brand with an impressive length range—hello, Extra Short and Micro options—Celebritips feel like real acrylic gel extensions, and they last like them too. The Lavender Water shade is a great everyday style.

Kiss Glam Embellished Press-Ons

Kiss

Kiss nails are a classic for a reason, but I've been reaching for them even more since the brand just did a full rebrand, complete with a new look and even more size options in each set for the perfect fit every time. I love a cat eye moment, and these magnetic chrome shorties were an instant hit for me. I felt like I was wearing a little jewel on every finger!
