The 10 Best Tinted Moisturizers That Offer Natural-Looking Coverage and a Boost of Hydration

The base for your best everyday makeup look.

TL;DR

If you find traditional foundation heavy and prefer a no-makeup makeup look or a lightweight, easy-to-apply formula, we recommend opting for a tinted moisturizer. Think of a tinted moisturizer as a hybrid between foundation and regular moisturizer—it offers coverage and skincare ingredients in one convenient product. “Tinted moisturizers are a little bit more forgiving, and the shade ranges are more flexible, making them a little more user-friendly than a foundation,” says celebrity makeup artist Kelli Anne Sewell.

But unlike a few years ago, there are now so many options with varying formulas, finishes, and coverage levels to choose from. To help you narrow down the best choice for your skin and makeup preferences, I, along with a diverse group of testers, tested nearly 50 products over several rounds to identify the best tinted moisturizers for every skin type. We evaluated each one based on its coverage, finish, hydration, wear, shade range, and overall results. These are the ones that impress us the most.

Tinted Moisturizer vs. Skin Tint vs. Tinted SPF

Wondering if there’s a difference between a tinted moisturizer, a skin tint, and a tinted SPF? The answer is: not really. “Tinted moisturizers, skin tints, and tinted SPFs all deliver a similar sheer, skin-like finish,” says makeup artist May Paulina. “All three work to counter redness, discoloration, and uneven pigmentation without too much coverage. Your texture and freckles may still show through, but they’ll look more evened out against the rest of your complexion.”

She explains that the subtle differences lie in the product’s intent:

  • A tinted moisturizer is a skincare product first and foremost, where hydration and skin-benefiting ingredients take priority, with pigment secondary. These tend to be thicker and more hydrating/emollient because they function as a moisturizer with the added benefit of slight color correction and pigmentation.
  • A skin tint sits more fully in makeup territory. I always describe it as a pared-down version of a foundation. It isn’t [usually] meant to provide skincare benefits, so the formula tends to be thinner and lighter than a tinted moisturizer. These feel almost like nothing on the skin.
  • Tinted SPF, on the other hand, is primarily aimed at sun protection and isn’t necessarily a high-performing makeup product. I think of it more as a sunscreen with some blurring and pigment benefits that leaves skin looking a bit more polished, but it’s not something I’d reach for as a makeup product in a glam kit.

The best way to know which to grab at the store is to be clear on your priorities,” Paulina explains. “If you’re looking for hydration and skincare benefits, go for the tinted moisturizer. If lightweight coverage and pigment are a priority, I’d go with a skin tint. And if you’re looking for a slightly more elevated sunscreen experience, try a tinted SPF!”

What We Like
  • Lightweight formula blends effortlessly

  • Provides buildable coverage that still looks like skin

  • Gorgeous radiant finish

  • Offers SPF 40

  • Accessible price point

What to Consider
  • Those with super oily skin might find it too glowy

Shades: 14 | Coverage: Buildable to medium | Finish: Glowy

I’ve tested more than a dozen tinted moisturizers over the last year or two, and I can confidently say this one stands out from the pack. Although it’s marketed as a tinted serum (which is very similar), I find the lightweight, mousse-like consistency is akin to a super spreadable moisturizer. Just one pump covers my entire face, blending in seamlessly to give my complexion an even tone—while maintaining a skin-like quality—and a beautiful, glowy finish. One layer provides light to medium coverage, but adding a second layer or dabbing on extra product where you want more coverage can build it up to standard medium coverage. Once applied, it lasts all day with minimal fading, which is rarely the case for me when wearing a complexion product with a glowy finish. If you have oily skin, I suggest setting it with a setting powder and a makeup-extending setting spray.

Between its easy-to-use formula, buildable coverage, fresh-looking finish, and under $20 price point, Versed knocked it out of the park with this tinted moisturizer.

What We Like
  • Accessible and affordable

  • Lightweight and easy to blend

  • Offers a bit of buildability

What to Consider
  • SPF 15 is low-level protection

Shades: 16 | Coverage: Light | Finish: Dewy

Those looking for a budget-friendly, easy-to-grab-in-a-pinch product should look no further than this gem from Revlon. With a lightweight texture that blends with minimal effort, it quickly evens discoloration and adds a boost of hydration to the skin, thanks to hyaluronic acid and vitamin E in the formula. Our tester, who has very oily skin, was impressed by how well it held up throughout the day, noting it felt light, comfortable, and nongreasy, and she observed minimal fading. The slightly dewy finish didn’t contribute to excess oil (like a lot of complexion products do), and she loved that it gave her skin an even, fresh-looking finish without looking makeup-y.

We always recommend applying a separate SPF under makeup, especially with this one, since it only offers SPF 15 (the American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher for adequate protection).

Dominique Hobdy, senior editor with oily skin (not shown): “I’d describe this as the ideal, dewy tinted moisturizer for ‘no makeup makeup’ days, where you want to even out your skin tone and not think about it again until it’s time to take it off.”

What We Like
  • Tester didn’t experience any settling into fine lines

  • Light coverage evens skin tone while maintaining a skin-like finish

  • Feels hydrating all day

What to Consider
  • Can fade a bit throughout the day

Shades: 18 | Coverage: Light | Finish: Dewy

While we love this pick for all skin types, we think it’s particularly nice for those with mature skin, since it’s super lightweight, doesn’t settle into fine lines, and offers long-lasting moisture. It has an easy-to-blend, light-coverage formula that evens redness and blurs dark spots and breakouts while maintaining a skin-like appearance. Our tester with sensitive, mature skin appreciated how comfortable and hydrating it felt during all-day wear, and noted how no-fuss it is to apply. She experienced very minor fading towards the end of the day, though she was really pleased with the natural-looking coverage and finish during most of the wear.

Sarah, mature tester with dry skin and redness (not shown): “I find it to be the perfect amount of coverage for a skin tint, since it was just enough to even out the skin tone without looking heavy or like I’m wearing anything at all. After hours of wear, my skin still felt hydrated and plump.”

What We Like
  • Keeps skin feeling hydrated all day

  • Buildable coverage

  • Gorgeous, radiant finish

What to Consider
  • Could be too radiant for those with super oily skin

Shades: 15 | Coverage: Light to medium | Finish: Radiant

Although marketed as a skin tint, this Milk Makeup formula can be layered to achieve medium coverage that blurs imperfections while maintaining a skin-like appearance. One layer creates a sheer veil of coverage, while a second layer offers more coverage that nicely camouflages redness and discoloration. It contains hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and squalane to deliver noticeable moisture, making it a great tinted moisturizer for dry skin. I appreciate that it keeps my skin hydrated without becoming greasy throughout the day. It layers well with other makeup products and gives my complexion a radiant glow that lasts for nearly 10 hours.

This pick is great for those looking for a buildable formula with a glowy finish, although it may be too glowy for people with super oily skin. If you have dry or balanced skin, we highly recommend it for everyday makeup looks.

What We Like
  • Dries down to a satin finish that lasts well on oily skin

  • Is buildable up to medium coverage

  • Blurs imperfections

What to Consider
  • Those with oily skin might want to set it with powder

Shades: 20 | Coverage: Buildable up to medium | Finish: Radiant/satin

This pick landed in our Reader’s Choice Awards 2025, and after testing it again, we stand behind our recommendation—and totally get why readers love it. Our tester, who describes her skin as incredibly oily, was surprised to find that although the formula looked dewy when she first applied it, it dried to a satin finish that wore well throughout the day. She appreciated its blendability, how she could build it up to cover imperfections effectively, and that it didn’t make her skin greasy after a full day’s wear. If you have oily skin and prefer a matte finish, you’ll want to mattify this one with setting powder.

Dominique Hobdy, senior editor with oily skin (not shown): “My skin felt a bit greasy at first, but somehow as I wore it throughout the day, it dried down, creating a really balanced look. I used my daily SPF moisturizer underneath, and after hours of wear, my skin was really comfortable.”

What We Like
  • Free from synthetic fragrances

  • Has National Eczema Association seal

  • Evens skin tone while looking natural

What to Consider
  • Can get a bit greasy throughout the day

Shades: 17 | Coverage: Light | Finish: Natural

People with sensitive skin know that finding a complexion product that covers existing imperfections without causing irritation or sensitivity can be tricky. This Tower 28 tinted sunscreen is great because it’s fragrance-free (synthetic fragrance can be a source of irritation for some), has a seal of acceptance from the National Eczema Association (meaning it’s suitable for people with eczema), and contains mineral SPF 30.

Our tester appreciated how its light texture blended seamlessly and how effectively it camouflaged redness and evened her skin tone. It sets to a natural finish on the skin, providing an even wash of coverage and a dose of sun protection, though she noted it can get shiny as the day goes on, so those with oily skin would benefit from setting it.

Amanda, tester (not shown): “It evened my complexion, camouflaged my redness, and gave my skin a healthy, natural glow.”

What We Like
  • Contains mineral SPF 30

  • Has hyaluronic acid and niacinamide in the formula

  • Hydrating and easy to blend into the skin

What to Consider
  • Has a strong SPF scent

Shades: 10 | Coverage: Light | Finish: Radiant

While we always recommend applying a separate face sunscreen under makeup, adding a tinted moisturizer with SPF protection on top is never a bad idea. This ultra-hydrating formula melts into the skin, leaving a natural-looking veil of color behind. Our tester, who recently started using retinol, adored the even-looking coverage and the hydration boost it provided her skin. Besides its fool-proof application—whether with fingers or a brush—the real standout is the powerhouse ingredient duo. Hyaluronic acid and niacinamide help smooth and hydrate skin while minimizing the appearance of pores. Our only complaint is that it has a strong fragrance, but if you’re looking for a product with SPF and you’re not sensitive to scent, we think you’ll love this pick.

Leann, tester with dry, combination skin (not shown): “It was very easy to apply both with my fingers and with a makeup brush (the latter worked better for those times when I wanted more coverage). The coverage was smooth and even and felt very lightweight on my skin.”

What We Like
  • Soft, natural-looking veil of coverage

  • Easy to apply with fingers

  • Feels moisturizing on the skin

What to Consider
  • Coverage isn’t buildable

Shades: 16 | Coverage: Light | Finish: Natural

Minimal-makeup fans, assemble: this is the tinted moisturizer for you. If you like barely detectable coverage that just slightly blurs your complexion, you’ll love this one from Jones Road. The texture feels like a standard moisturizer, which is why our tester noted it was easy to apply with her fingertips and blended out evenly, offering a helping of hydration and a subtle wash of color. She appreciated that it kept her skin feeling hydrated all day, though she wished it offered some more buildability.

Madison Barber, writer with combination, acne-prone skin (not shown): “I used my fingers mostly, as the formula blended out super easily (like a traditional moisturizer). It also has very, very sheer coverage, making it easy to blend out without thinking too hard about it.”

What We Like
  • Very buildable coverage

  • Contains hydrating vitamin E

  • Smooths over skin texture

What to Consider
  • Can feel a bit heavy on the skin

Shades: 16 | Coverage: Full | Finish: Dewy

We’d typically recommend a full-coverage foundation if you’re after strong concealing, but this full-coverage tinted moisturizer delivers strong pigmentation. It contains SPF 20, sodium hyaluronate, and vitamin E to hydrate and nourish the skin, and boasts impressive buildable coverage. One layer did a fantastic job of evening out our tester’s complexion and creating a radiant glow, while a second layer provided full coverage that resembled a true foundation. Because it’s highly buildable, it’s a versatile product to keep in your makeup bag for quick day-to-night adjustments.

The texture is slightly thicker than most tinted moisturizers we tested, though we only noticed this when really layering it up.

What We Like
  • Coverage can be built up as desired

  • Feels hydrating but nongreasy

  • Offers a smooth, dewy finish

What to Consider
  • Can cling to dryness

Shades: 20 | Coverage: Light to medium | Finish: Natural/dewy

If you prefer a versatile product that you can build for heavier makeup days or sheer out for minimal makeup looks, give this buildable tinted moisturizer a try. It has a pretty lightweight, easy-to-blend formula that evens the complexion—without sacrificing your skin’s natural appearance—in one layer. Want more coverage? A second layer or spot application over imperfections does the job. Our tester with acne-prone skin appreciated that it evened her skin tone, felt comfortable and hydrating, and left a smooth, dewy finish without being greasy. Her one minor qualm was that it clung to some dryness on her chin, so we recommend exfoliating and moisturizing before applying it.

Madison Barber, writer with combination, acne-prone skin (not shown): “This formula offers medium, buildable coverage. It felt like the perfect amount for me, even as someone who typically prefers light coverage. It helped even out my skin tone and cover any dark marks while providing a dewy finish.”

What to Look for in a Tinted Moisturizer

  • Shade Range: While you’ll want to get as close a match to your skin tone as possible, it’s not as crucial with tinted moisturizers as it is with foundation. “A lot of brands don’t carry as full a range with tinted moisturizers as they do foundation,” says pro makeup artist Amber Amos. “However, since the pigment isn’t as full force, offerings typically cover a range of shades.” Look for a shade that’s the same as your skin’s undertones with a similar depth.
  • Finish: Just like foundations, tinted moisturizers come in a variety of finishes. If you have dry skin, look for one packed with hydrating ingredients with a radiant or dewy finish. If you have oily skin, one with a natural or matte finish that won’t contribute to excess oil.
  • Coverage: Although tinted moisturizers typically offer light to medium coverage, some offer almost undetectable coverage, and others can be built up to full coverage. It’s ultimately a matter of preference, but if you want a super versatile product, look for one with medium buildable coverage that you can sheer out or layer up to achieve your desired look.

  • Factors Considered: Application, coverage, hydration, and wear.
FAQ
  • What’s the best way to apply tinted moisturizer?

A tinted moisturizer should be applied as the last step in your skincare routine or in place of foundation in your makeup routine. If you have super oily skin, you can replace your regular moisturizer with a tinted moisturizer to minimize excess oil. The product you choose can be applied the same way you would with your fingertips, a damp makeup sponge, or a foundation brush. It’s totally up to you and what you prefer, though Sewell recommends pressing it in with your hands so it sinks into the skin and looks seamless. Note: You’ll achieve the most coverage when applying with your fingertips or a brush.

  • How can you make a tinted moisturizer last on your skin?

There are no rules for makeup application, but we typically recommend applying concealer after foundation in areas that could use more coverage. This helps prevent you from over-applying the product and ending up with thick or cakey makeup.
