As someone who has been bleaching my hair for six years, I can confidently say I’ll never get bored of being blonde. There are so many different types of blonde to explore, from icy champagne to strawberry, and it’s easy to switch it up when I need a change. Most recently, I’ve been transitioning from ashy, cool-toned blonde to a warmer, honey shade. Like the rest of TikTok, I took a color analysis and realized I look better in warmer tones, which explains why I often felt washed out while rocking ash blonde hair. And with more celebrities sporting the warm blonde trend, it feels cool to ditch the platinum.

Making the switch to honey blonde hasn’t been so straightforward. Most products formulated for blondes use purple pigments to cancel out warm, golden tones, and even when I ask for a warm toner at the salon, I’m usually left with a cooler shade. There's a conventional thought that all bleached hair will eventually turn brassy, hence the abundance of purple toning products and stylists toning down the brightness. Yet I’ve personally found that my hair rarely turns brassy (shoutout to my shower filter) and instead loves holding on to gray-silver tones, so I actually need some help bringing out the warmth.

After trying everything from in-salon toners to DIY methods, I’ve finally found the easiest way to transform my beige blonde into golden: Christophe Robin Shade Variation Mask in Golden Blonde. This nourishing hair mask easily tones hair at home in a few minutes, and you can use it whenever your hair color needs a little pick-me-up.

Formula

Christophe Robin Shade Variation Mask comes in five shades, each deeply pigmented to impart the color on your hair. I use the Golden Blonde Shade and admit I was a little intimidated when I opened the lid. The mask looks darker than I initially expected with a slightly orange tinge. However, it’s important to remember the shade in the bottle is never as intense as what’s left on your hair—or else we would all be walking around with violet hair after using purple shampoo. Also, blonde hair isn’t one-dimensional, and warmer tones have elements of gold, yellow, and apricot. In addition to enhancing the shade, this mask contains many nourishing ingredients like sweet almond oil, apricot oil, glycerin, and shea butter, making it an excellent choice for my chemically damaged hair. Purple shampoos and professional toners tend to be drying, so finding a toning product that actually repairs hair is refreshing.

Consistency

This mask feels just like a luxurious mask should—rich, velvety, and with a divine scent reminiscent of Moroccanoil products. While I usually only apply hair masks and conditioner to the bottom half of my hair, I apply this one all over to ensure equal coverage, and it still doesn’t weigh down my roots or leave them greasy.

Application

What I love about this toning mask is how easy it is to use. Compared to a regular toner, which requires a chemical developer and gloves, this one is pretty hard to mess up. After shampooing, I apply it to my hair in place of a regular conditioner. The brand recommends towel drying the hair first so the water doesn’t dilute the mask. Since it’s a thick consistency, it doesn’t drip or run like toners or hair gloss, and it has never stained my hands or shower.

Another aspect that I love about this hair mask is that you can work your way up in terms of color intensity. The brand recommends leaving it on for five minutes the first time and evaluating if the color is strong enough. It’s not so intense that your hair color will drastically change after one or two minutes, and the pigment washes out after three to five shampoos, so it’s not permanent.

The first time I used it, I forgot to towel dry my hair and only kept it on for 3-5 minutes. To no surprise, I didn’t notice much of a difference. Since then, I’ve found the sweet spot of leaving the mask on for 10 minutes and always towel drying before. My hair is noticeably more golden without being brassy when I do this. Best yet, my hair is left shiny, hydrated, and healthy. As someone who depends on hair masks to revive my bleached hair, this is my ideal solution for enhancing the tone of my hair in an easy, foolproof way.

If you’ve been thinking about experimenting with a new color this year, whether it be copper chic or warm chestnut, it’s a great way to test it out at home without making a permanent change. And even if you are an ash blonde devotee, there’s a baby blonde shade to keep your highlights cool between appointments. If there’s one thing I’ve learned after coloring my hair for years, it’s that the work doesn’t stop at the salon—the right home care is crucial to maintaining your dream shade.
