Hair growth solutions are everywhere—from your TikTok feed to your TV—and it can be difficult to cut through the noise to figure out what hair loss solution is actually effective. As far as less invasive options go, there are medications, serums, supplements, and LED light devices. While you’ve likely seen plenty of LED light face masks (and perhaps own one yourself!), you might not be familiar with LED light therapy for your scalp. “Low-level light therapy (LLLT), either red or near infrared light, can help to increase hair density, meaning keeping more hair on your scalp at a given time,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Kristen Lo Sicco.
Our tester, who was struggling with bald spots on her scalp, put CurrentBody’s LED Red Light Hair Growth Helmet to the test to see if it could improve her scalp and hair health. Keep reading to see her results, alongside more expert insight on red light therapy for hair loss from Dr. Sicco.

About Her Scalp and Hair: Bald Areas and Dull Hair Prone to Breakage
Our tester, Erica, started experiencing stress-related hair loss on the back of her scalp around a year and a half ago. The 27-year-old also dealt with frequent hair breakage and said her hair looked dull. She has slightly wavy, type 2A hair. She hoped that the treatment would promote hair growth and make her hair more resilient. She did not use any other hair growth products in tandem with this helmet.
How It Works
The CurrentBody LED Red Light Hair Growth Helmet features 120 evenly spaced red LED lights that supply wavelengths of 620–660 nm to the scalp. The wavelengths encourage growth by activating the hairs. This FDA-cleared mask, which covers the whole scalp, is designed to be used for just 10 minutes a day and has a built-in timer to help you keep track. Low-level light therapy has been shown to be effective for hereditary hair loss—aka, androgenetic alopecia.
The red light can bring back dormant hair follicles, but if there are no hair follicles left, this treatment won’t work. According to Dr. Lo Sicco, one way to check is to see if areas of the scalp are shiny, meaning no hair follicles are lurking underneath. This is common if you’ve been suffering from hair loss for multiple years. And just because the red light therapy has brought your hair back doesn’t mean that you can shove your hair helmet to the back of your closet. “Like any therapy that we use to treat androgenetic alopecia (AGA), we must continue using it to maintain its benefit,” says Dr. Lo Sicco. “To date, there is no known cure for AGA.”
How to Use
Your hair should be dry, clean, and product-free every time you use the helmet. CurrentBody strongly suggests doing a sensitivity test first, which involves using the helmet for 10 minutes and monitoring how your scalp feels. If it feels hot or uncomfortable, take off the helmet. Check out the scalp after six hours to see if it’s red or itchy—if it is, CurrentBody recommends discontinuing use.
Overall, Erica enjoyed using CurrentBody’s cordless hair helmet. She said that despite the product’s bulky appearance, it was lightweight and comfortable to sit or move around in for the 10-minute daily duration. At first glance, the built-in Bluetooth headphones might seem a little excessive for a hair growth device, but it was Erica’s favorite feature. “When I was not relaxing, I would wear the helmet while listening to a podcast and straightening up my kitchen before bed,” she says. She also noted the battery life was long-lasting despite daily use and just needed to be charged in its charging port once a week. She does, however, recommend tying your hair up before placing the helmet on your head, because otherwise it can get caught in the headphones.
The Results
Erica tested this product for 16 weeks and gave it a rave review—a rare 10/10. She was thrilled that her bald spots disappeared, her hair grew, and her overall hair health changed significantly for the better after just six weeks. “In the area of my scalp where I had clearly visible hair loss, my baby hairs have fully covered the former bald spot and blend in naturally with my full-length hair,” she says. “The baby hairs are a few centimeters to 2 inches long and seamlessly blend in on my scalp. My normal hair also grew significantly faster than normal, with at least 2-3 inches of new growth.”
Not only did this helmet stimulate hair growth, but it also strengthened and softened her hair strands. Erica used to wash her hair five to seven times per week, but since using the helmet, she’s down to three or four wash days and has cut down on her dry shampoo use. Her scalp’s oiliness reduced just one month after incorporating this helmet into her life. “[The] compliments began after a month, with many friends and some strangers commenting on how beautiful my hair looked and asking for my routine,” she adds.
The Value
At $859.99, the CurrentBody LED Red Light Hair Growth Helmet is definitely a splurge. There are cheaper hair loss treatments available, with some as little as $1 a day, but they are usually oral or topical medications. And as our expert said earlier, you can’t just stop a hair loss treatment without losing all of those great results.
For those who want a hair loss treatment that doesn’t involve a prescription, we recommend this helmet if you are 100% sure you will use it every day. Our tester saw results in just six weeks, but CurrentBody’s website says to give it 12 weeks. It will take a few years to get the cost per use down to $1 per day, but this effective LED red light hair device is worth it if you’re in it for the long haul.
