French manicures are classic for a reason: They just work. And, like any great classic, they can be reinvented and reimagined endlessly. A French does not simply have to be a French. One of our favorite twists on the staple? The double French.
A double French is manicure, by definition, any version of a French manicure (or quasi-French manicure) with more than one tip element. That second “tip” might be at the bottom of the nail; it might simply be an outline of the traditional tip. So long as there are two of those tip-esque elements, you’ve got yourself a double French manicure.
Intrigued? Ahead, we’ve rounded up 23 of our favorite takes on the double French manicure. Scroll on to see ‘em.
Swirls and Tips

A French tip can be whatever you want it to be—and in this case, it’s asymmetrical swirling lines. We love how each tip is slightly different; no two nails are alike! The red outline makes a bold statement and elevates this manicure.
Subtle Studs

Don’t overthink things. Transform a traditional French into a double with some teeny-tiny studs. Place them in a halo shape along the ends of each tip, and you’ve got yourself a sparkling yet understated mani.
Statement Maker

This airbrushed, sunset-esque manicure has so many fun elements going for it, but our favorite is the dual-French tip on that middle finger.
Dual-French, Dual-Tone
Kleo Kolor
We love a two-tone French manicure, and it’s so fun to see both of those tones incorporated into the same tips. FYI: This look is extremely easy to get at home—all you need is a set of Kleo Kolor Deux it Again press ons.
Ocean-Inspired
@heluviee/Instagram
Take a page from the foamy waters lapping up at the shore this summer with an ocean-inspired double French. Nail artist Sarah Haidar used magnetic polishes for this set, but you can get a similar effect with duochrome shades of blue and silver.
Forest Green
@brushedbyb_/Instagram
One of the quickest ways to add some visual interest to a mani is by playing with negative space. In the same color as your French tips, paint on a shadow-like curve a touch below the original tip. Be sure you leave enough space between the two for the base nail color to shine through.
Red Stripes
@digitzbydev/Instagram
Why stop at two French tips when you can have four? Transform your tips into multiples with a striped effect. The clear spaces between the stripes add an edgy touch.
Double Black
@nailsbysuman/Instagram
While black can be a bit harsh for summer manicures, using the color sparingly can make a (seasonally-appropriate) big impact. Make sure to lock everything in with a super glossy top coat for that baby chrome effect.
Solid and Swirled
@overglowedit/instagram
Solid and striped? Nah, how about solid and swirled. Both your tip designs can be chrome if you so choose!
Mismatched Pastels
@imarninails/Instagram
Mix and match your favorite pastel shades with a half-moon French tip duo. Be sure to make your half-moon “tips” thinner than the French tips to create more visual contrast between the two hues.
Animal Style
@yo_keshh/Instagram
What’s black and white and red all over? This manicure. Pair a neutral-colored print, like these fun zebra stripes, with a bold red for an automatically punched-up manicure.
Multicolored Waves
@lolo.nailedit/Instagram
Playing around with color pairings and tip shapes is an easy way to amp up a traditional French manicure. Case in point: These wavy French tips that utilize unexpected color combos on each nail.
Tied With a Bow
@samrosenails/Instagram
There’s something about a baby pink paired with a merlot red that gets us every time—it’s just the chicest. This coquette double French makes great use of ribbon and bow motifs.
White-Lined and Pointed
@digitzbydev/Instagram
A bold nail shape can take a relatively simple manicure to the next level—even a double French. These bold, pointed tips amp up the look, no color or additional art necessary.
Sparkling Brights
@brushedbyb_/Instagram
When in doubt in the summer, go bold, bright, and sparkly. The combination always delights.
Chocolate Gradient
@phoebesummernails/Instagram
Pick a color and use it in different shades on each nail to create a simple color gradient. It’s an easy way to elevate a manicure if you don’t have advanced nail art skills.
Fine Lines
@betina_goldstein/Instagram
Follow the edge of the nail as closely as possible to create a thin-lined double French manicure. Whatever you choose as your initial tip color, we suggest pairing it with something that’ll create a stark contrast. A bold, sparkly shade is always a good bet.
Inside Out
@brushedbyb_/Instagram
Try mixing and matching classic French tips with negative-space double French tips. The effect looks even cooler in two bold complementary colors, like this orange and blue pairing.
Dripping Cat Eye
@samrosenails/Instagram
Use a nail polish with a cat-eye effect to create a mesmerizing dripping tip on each nail. Then, to give the organic shapes a more finished feel, line each in solid gold chrome.
Zebra Printed
@digitzbydev/Instagram
We love animal prints, and we really love avant-garde takes on animal prints. The layering of the zebra stripes over these traditional French tips is absolutely genius, and creates an eye-catching visual effect that’ll garner tons of compliments.
Neons
@overglowedit/Instagram
For extra wow factor, pair each neon-colored French tip with a different neon outline. We suggest sticking within the colors you’ve already used on the nails—it gives the manicure a harmonious, finished feel.
Geometric
@yo_keshh/Instagram
Try a geometric, triangular French tip to really spice things up. Pair with a pop of color to transform your look into a double French that really impresses.
