Key Takeaways
- Dyson is launching Airsmooth, their first dedicated dryer brush, on Tuesday, September 8.
- Designed for healthier hair, it features innovative bristles and heat-control technology.
I’ll never forget the feeling of receiving my first Dyson Airwrap in the mail. It was a chilly January day and I no longer had a penny of Christmas money to my name, but I was about to have the best hair of my entire life.
I’ve been in love ever since... except for the days when all I want is a good old fashioned round brush-and-blow-dryer blowout. In these situations, I’m a hopeless cause when left to my own (physical and technical) devices. Until now! On Tuesday, September 8, Dyson is launching Airsmooth, their very first dedicated dryer brush designed for healthier hair.
“Yes, this tool and the round brush in the Airwrap have similarities, but this is a tool designed for one main purpose, so it’s optimized for that purpose,” explains the brand’s global ambassador, celebrity hairstylist Matthew Collins. “This may be something an Airwrap owner will want as an additional tool. It can be a great hair prep tool before you curl or flat iron, it’s an amazing standalone tool for certain looks, and an amazing prep step for all other looks.”

The Inspiration
It’s no secret that Dyson loves to make things easier for us. They know we’re all so busy, and that we also care about our hair. So... why not design products that are simple to use but also make sure our hair stays healthy and gorgeous?
“The Dyson Airsmooth brings together Dyson’s pioneering airflow technology with unique PivotFlex and Anti-snag bristle technology, to help dry, smooth, and lift hair in one easy step, with less breakage,” shared the brand in a press release. “The Dyson Airsmooth is designed for hassle-free styling and maximum confidence. No switching tools. No complicated routines. No compromise. Just a smoother, more efficient way to get to the perfect polish, for all hair types.”
The Technology
Though they absolutely do the trick when it comes to an easy blowout, many hot air brushes stress out your precious strands. Excessive heat and snag-prone ball-tip bristles can lead to damage, dryness, and breakage.
Dyson’s solution was a patented dual bristle system (more on that in a second) that guides your hair instead of fighting with it. Meanwhile, intelligent heat control technology measures the temperature of your hair 100 times a second for a controlled, comfortable, and healthier styling routine for all hair types.
“This tool immediately felt comfortable when I first used it. It’s so lightweight and fits into the hand really nicely, and the finish on the tool gives good grip. It doesn’t blow air everywhere and send your hair all over; the air is powerful yet precision controlled,” notes Collins. “The shape of the brush is more of a teardrop shape vs. the traditional round shape. This shape allows for optimal tension from root to tip while you’re using it. A round formation lets the hair glide too quickly and lose the perfect tension needed to stretch hair out safely.”

The Bristles
The bristles received a makeover, too.
“The bristles are firmer, which helps with the tension to get a smooth look, but a lot of thought and design went into what the bristles actually do to prevent unnecessary stress and mechanical damage,” notes the artist. “On the sides of the brush there are anti-snag bristles that have a unique looped structure that collapses to release strands with ease, reducing snagging and improving scalp comfort. The ends have pivot flex bristles that have an open base design that allows high-pressure airflow, minimizing frizz and hair disturbance as you style. These also flex to wrap and release easily.”
Up to 90 degrees, in fact.

How to Use It
While the tool is really for all hair types, Collins says you’ll see the best results on types 1, 2, and 3 hair.
“With type 4 hair, some individuals may find it works great for them to create a smooth blowout, and for others they may use it to stretch and smooth,” he explains. “The best looks you’ll achieve are smooth, voluminous looks with a nice soft salon blowout. You can even go section by section, then leave that section in a roller to let it cool for extra bounce in the end style.”
When it comes time to style, the artist suggests starting with wet hair for best results. (Though damp will work, too!)
“The more texture you have, the more moisture you want to start with. I suggest bigger sections than you would imagine—on most people I tested it on, I could finish the head in 12 sections or less, so this is a major time saver,” he says. “I suggest wet hair and a few sprays of the Dyson Omega Leave-In Conditioner, then finish off the ends with the Omega Hydrating Hair Oil. And of course, if you want max volume, add your fave mousse to wet hair at the beginning as well.”
You can shop the Dyson Airsmooth ($250) at Dyson Demo stores, dyson.com, Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, Amazon, Best Buy, and Target beginning Tuesday, September 8.
