As it so often goes, the summer season has chugged along at full speed, and we’re now quickly approaching all things cozy and autumnal. From warm lighting and nostalgic rom-coms to seasonal flavors and sweater weather, folks everywhere are flocking to Instagram to prepare their closets, calendars, and homes for fall. On that note, it’s high time to add an extra layer to the mix.
Before relying on your old faithful, you might consider refreshing your wardrobe with one of the most stylish fall jacket trends for 2026—all of which are anything but fads. According to fashion stylist Kyla Flax, head of creative and brand styling at Anthropologie, funnel necks, capes, and suede and fur styles are just a few of the must-try outerwear trends bringing us playful textures and silhouettes with staying power. Ahead, explore the seven fall jacket trends she expects to be on every sidewalk, in every catalog, on every grid, and around every corner in the months to come, complete with product picks to shop.
Funnel Necks

As is evident in athleisure—hello, Parke, and all the inspired silhouettes that have debuted since—high funnel necklines are having a moment. What started as a chic sweatshirt has since evolved into more elevated outerwear silhouettes. “Let the jacket be the statement,” Flax says. “I love the funnel neck silhouette in every kind of fabrication, from nylon and canvas to wool and leather. It instantly gives even the simplest look a little more attitude.”

Chic Capes

Cape jackets have been trending since the beginning of the year. What makes this outerwear style so coveted is just how versatile it is. Depending on the fabrication, cape jackets can range from ultra-lightweight to heavy and warm, making them a great transitional piece for any wardrobe. And then there’s the fact that they’re undeniably chic. “The cape jacket is more of a fashion moment and a fun alternative to your everyday coat,” Flax says. “I love that the shape is often rounded through the shoulders while still leaving your hands free.”
If a cape jacket feels totally out of your wheelhouse, don’t be discouraged. “Style it with a slim trouser and an oversized knit for that perfect contrast of volume and shape,” Flax instructs.

Suede Silhouettes

Suede is synonymous with autumn, so it’s no surprise that the soft leather textile is trending for fall 2026. “Suede jackets bring a nostalgic feeling, but this season they feel much more elevated,” Flax says. “The shapes are cleaner and boxier, and the styling is more modern and minimal rather than leaning too Western. It feels like a fresh way to wear suede.”

Bomber jackets are a staple for transitional weather, making them ideal for both autumn and spring. This fall, Flax says the bigger the bomber, the better. “The best part about a bomber is the exaggerated silhouette—the oversized shape, dropped shoulder, and fuller sleeves give even a simple outfit a strong point of view,” she explains. “I love when the jacket does all the work.”

Shrunken Styles
Anthropologie
As popular as cozy, oversized jackets always are for fall, we’re currently noticing a shift toward shrunken styles. “The shrunken jacket feels like the fashion equivalent of the skinny jean,” Flax says. “This smaller, tighter shape is such an easy way to make an outfit feel new. It makes high-waisted pants feel longer, makes a full skirt feel even more dramatic, and gives you definition without needing a belt.”

Lady Layers

Like shrunken jackets, “lady” silhouettes are designed to be form-fitting. In that way, they’re often considered a key example of form over function. While they might not keep you incredibly warm on a crisp night, they will undoubtedly elevate your autumn attire. “Lady jackets are actually the opposite of prim,” Flax points out, referencing the classic cropped, collarless jackets of the ‘90s and early ‘00s. “The key is how you style them. Try one with low-rise jeans and pumps for a night out. It’s very Upper East Side-meets-Y2K, which makes it feel unexpected and a little cooler.”

Furry Accents
Never Fully Dressed
Fur might seem too heavy for fall, but it all depends on where you live and how you style it. If you live in the Northeast, for example, you might be able to comfortably wear a full faux-fur jacket for an evening or afternoon out. If, however, your area stays warmer for longer, cuffs may be the better option. Either way, Flax declares that “fur jackets are for the people.”
In Flax’s opinion, fur should be worn anywhere and everywhere, not saved solely for special occasions. “To Whole Foods, to Pilates, to the grocery store—I love taking something that once felt formal or reserved for a special occasion and making it part of your everyday wardrobe,” she shares. “That’s what makes this trend so fun.”
