Picture it: 2008. I’ve just turned 21 and I am going out. It was a glorious era to be newly 21—drinks were cheap, music was fun, and everyone was wearing so much American Apparel. I’d pull on my favorite AA bodycon dress, a pair of ripped tights, sky-high shoes, and paint on bold strokes of MAC Fluidline gel eyeliner before a night out, ending with a spritz or three of my favorite party-girl perfumes, Elle by YSL and Angel by Thierry Mugler among them.

Elle by YSL, which came in a very indie sleaze-adjacent tall, hot pink bottle, is sadly discontinued and hard to find, but a whole new crop of throwback party-girl perfumes have popped up to take its place—including the next generation of going-out scents, like little sisters following in their elder sibling’s platform heels.

Fragrances of the mid-2000s and the indie sleaze era were meant to be noticed, sprayed with abandon before a night out and refreshed the next morning when you rolled out of bed, cleaned up last night’s eyeliner (well, just a little; the smudged look was cool), and started your day. They’d linger in your hair and on the collar of your ripped denim or vintage fur jacket, mingling with a little smoke from the American Spirit you bummed. They were bold, dramatic, and flirtatious, and for many millennial perfume lovers, they’re like a fragrant time capsule. And now, those of us who experienced their going-out goodness the first time can revisit it anew!

The New Going-Out Scents

My friend Claire, a designer based in Chicago, has been wearing the original Dior Addict since it came out in 2002. “I have fragrance-specific synesthesia: the second I smell Dior Addict, I hear ‘Like I Love You’ by Justin Timberlake,” she says. “It instantly transports me back to fraternity parties of the year I wore it, when Justified was played on repeat. Back then, it was so heady and strong that a fraction of a spritz lasted for days on my Bebe going-out tops.” Though Dior Addict doesn’t smell quite the same as it did more than 20 years ago, she says it “still has nocturnal florals and Queen of the Night energy to spare… if you really want to feel transported, layer it with a little secondhand smoke.”

Now, there’s a new crew of Dior Addict flankers with the same fun, up-for-anything energy: Rosy Glow, Peachy Glow, and Purple Glow, each designed in a specific color with a fresh, youthful vibe. The bottles look similar to its predecessor, as well as Dior’s popular Lip Glow Balm and Oils, but where the original Dior Addict was kittenishly sexy, the new trio are more aligned with the peppy, fruity-floral vibes of youth-focused scents today.

Another 2000s dance-floor mainstay that got a 2026 makeover is Calvin Klein’s Euphoria, a lush blend of black orchid and amber that felt right at home spritzed on a sequined “going out top” and pair of flare jeans, or paired with a fedora and Chanel Black Satin nail polish at Les Deux a la Lauren Conrad and Audrina Patridge in The Hills. While you may have expected CK One to get an update based on the success of Love Story and all things CBK, the brand is leaning into the indie sleaze-era scent with the launch of three new Euphoria Elixirs, flanker scents built around Euphoria’s signature orchid note, plus more vanilla since it’s the ultimate scent of the 2020s: Solar (mango and orchid), Bold (jasmine and orchid), and Magnetic (orchid and musk).

Mugler's Angel defies time and trends, but the legendary gourmand has gone through several evolutions over the years with a variety of flankers, including the new Angel Blush. Where the original Angel is potent and powerful, Blush leans into Gen Z’s love of softer skin scents and cozy gourmands with almond milk, creamy musk, vanilla, and patchouli. But it’s still Angel at its core, so while it may be sweet, it’s certainly not shy.

These scents aren’t just fun to smell; they’re a reminder that going out is fun! After years of staying in and laying low, it feels like the right time to dance on tables again, to play a Passion Pit or Kesha song on TouchTunes, to hang out past your bedtime and watch the sunrise from a rooftop or backyard or dive bar patio. (And even better if you’re wearing your almost-vintage going out top and Dojo flare jeans or a modern Seven for all Mankind runway copy from this past season of NYFW.) Who said Gen Z and millennials can’t get along?
