Key Takeaways

  • Patrick Ta is launching Transition Blush on May 28, a duo of products (plus a brush!) that bridge the flush gap between your cheeks and under-eye area.
  • The artist explains exactly how the products used and what inspired them.

Something nice about being an innovator is that the process usually isn't a one-time thing. Innovators stay innovating.

Take Patrick Ta, for example. Five years ago, the makeup artist launched a viral crème-over-powder blush duo. Now, he has a lineup of products arriving to make your wildest flushed-cheek dreams come true, specifically targeting the part of the face that longs to be dreamed about/blushed about the most.

"As a makeup artist, I’ve always been obsessed with creating the most seamless, airbrushed blush look, starting from the under-eye into the cheek," the artist tells Byrdie. "I would constantly mix formulas in my kit to bridge concealer and blush together. And honestly, I kept thinking… 'why doesn’t a product already exist for this part of your makeup routine?'"

Now, it does. Keep reading to discover everything you need to know about Transition Blush—which launches May 28!—from Patrick Ta himself.

The Inspiration

Transition Blush—a collection featuring a liquid blush, dual-ended blush brush, and blurring blush duo—was made to target the area from your under-eyes to cheek. The products offer a seamless gradient effect that appears airbrushed; there are no harsh lines or heavy layers, just a gorgeous (and natural-looking, as color does regularly show up there) flush.

"I love blush, I’m known for my blush, and I wanted to continue to push the category forward. So I created an entirely new blush category focused specifically on the ‘in-between’—the transition zone of a very overlooked part of your makeup routine. It’s really about making a flawless, blurred blush every time," Ta explains. "There was nothing specifically made for that transition area between the under-eye and the cheek. It’s such a small detail, but it changes the entire finish of your makeup. That’s how Transition Blush was born."

The Products

Ta says that unlike a traditional blush—which is typically used to add a flush of color to a specific area of the cheek—Transition Blush is "really about connecting and diffusing products for the most seamless finish possible."

"The formulas are intentionally softer, more sheer, and ultra-blurring because they’re designed to melt into the skin—not sit on top of it," he explains. "The Liquid Transition Brightening Blush provides a fresh wash of color that blends directly into concealer to softly brighten the under-eye area. The Transition Blurring Blush Duo then diffuses everything together, creating a blurring effect, essentially serving as a blurring veil."

Made to blend into your favorite complexion product, Liquid Transition Brightening Blush is formulated with soothing vitamin E and deeply hydrating sodium hyaluronate. It's available in four shades: the lilac Between Us, vibrant coral Quite Confident, peachy Did You Notice, and pink Shy at First.

Then, there's the Blurring Transition Powder. Each compact features two complementary shades with about 1/4 the pigment of the classic Major Headlines Blush Duos, so you can never apply too much. The five shades include the four mentioned above, plus the tangerine All or Nothing.

"A pro tip is to mix the two shades in the Transition Blurring Blush Duos—I personally love blending both powders together for an even more diffused, airbrushed effect," explains Ta. "I recently used this technique on Maura Higgins to showcase how each product seamlessly blurs into the next, creating a blend that goes beyond traditional blush."

How to Use It

The vision here is to "brighten before, blur after." And Ta gave us a full pro-tip breakdown.

"You start by applying concealer under the eyes, but don’t fully blend it out. While the concealer is still slightly wet, add the Liquid Transition Brightening Blush to the back of your hand and pick it up with a brush. Then blend that into the concealer," he explains. "You don’t apply the liquid onto bare skin; it needs to mix into your other complexion products."

Next, go in with your a loose powder to set under the eyes and apply your powder blush (ideally the already-beloved Major Headlines Powder Blush ) for your pop of color on your actual cheeks.

"The blurring powder is the last step," says the artist. "Sweep the Powder Transition Blurring Blush over the top as a final 'blurring veil,' softening everything and erasing any harsh lines for a brightened blush blur with seamless diffusion."

You can shop the Liquid Transition Brightening Blushes ($34), Transition Blurring Blush Duo ($30), and Dual-Ended Transition Brush ($40) beginning Thursday, May 28 at Sephora and sephora.com.
