Come spring, we typically thrust light, bright, and fruity scents to the forefront of our fragrance wardrobes. One note that’s sure to be on rotation this season is peach. Yet, unlike the super-sweet peach perfumes you probably grew up with, the juicy scent has undergone a major makeover, offering a more refined interpretation than ever before.
Rather than featuring just the single note in syrupy body mists (as it was once most famous for), modern perfumers are layering peach with musks, florals, and even unexpected smoky spices, thanks to its unique versatility. Ahead, we unpack the stone fruit’s new profile, along with nine of our favorite scents that feature the delectable note.
Meet the Experts
- Douglas Little is a perfumer and the founder of Heretic Parfum
- Erwan Raguenes is a perfumer at DSM-Firmenich.
Behind the Note
Historically, gourmand peach notes have tended to lean toward a direct iteration of the fruit, often being sweet, somewhat syrupy, and playful. “A classic peach scent is velvety, luminous, and slightly creamy, but it also has a sweet brightness to it that makes it pretty literal,” Little shares.
Typically, fruit notes are emblematic of their personality. “For example, peach tends to feel soft and velvety compared to other fruit notes like cherry, which often reads as dark, rich, and more syrupy,” Raguenes explains. “Peach also offers a lighter, more luminous fruitiness that blends seamlessly into many fragrance styles.”
On its own, a well-formulated yet highly versatile peach note can make a fragrance feel warm and juicy without any heaviness. According to Raguenes, a classic peach scent has a natural sweetness with a subtle floral quality, making it feel bright and comforting. Instead of reading strictly as fizzy or sugary, today’s peach fragrances are being designed to be more nuanced. When paired with the right accords, peach scents suddenly become more sophisticated, offering multi-layered appeal. As Little shares, “we’re exploring the fuzziness of peach skin, the slightly fermented edge of overripe fruit, and the soft, lactonic creaminess inside the flesh of the fruit so that fragrance becomes more about texture and atmosphere than peach flavors.”
Why It's Trending
Peach scents are making a major comeback, thanks in part to the note’s incredible duality. Raguenes says that peach’s uplifting, fresh, and optimistic qualities naturally align with spring. “Citrus notes traditionally signal the season, but now we’re seeing fruity notes, like peach, gain momentum because they deliver that same brightness with a softer, more comforting dimension.”
Today, peach is often paired with florals, woods, patchouli, musks, incense, citrus, or tea notes, which Little explains helps ground the sweetness of peach, creating a more sensual and refined feeling rather than something playful or girlish. “The note has this remarkable ability to shift depending on what surrounds it, creating something subtly provocative, almost subversive. It hints at intimacy without being explicit,” he says. “And that’s where peach becomes interesting. It stops being just a fruit note and starts becoming something tactile, sensual, and a little bit dangerous.”
