It's not hard for Selena Gomez to be good at something (she's a quadruple threat, which is what I'm going to start calling a performer with a killer beauty line), but she's certainly found her niche in the crime comedy world. First there was Only Murders in the Building, and now there's Emilia Pérez, the release of which has been accompanied by some gorgeous—and on-theme—press tour glam.
For her latest trick, the Rare Beauty founder paid tribute to the film's gothic fairytale vibe with a similarly dramatic lip at the December 5 IndieWire Honors. A take on the "dark rose" lipliner trend that we've been seeing pop up again this year, the look consisted of a perfect color gradient: a deep, dark lip liner made its way into a true apple red at the center of the star's lips.
The artist behind that expert blending? Hung Vanngo, who utilized a combination of Rare Beauty's Kind Words Matte Lip Liners in Strong (a rich chocolate brown) and Devoted (a true red) as well as the Kind Words Matte Lipstick in Devoted.
Vanngo kept the rest of the look simple enough, applying some nude shadow and a swipe of black liner to Gomez's brown eyes and an expert pop of highlighter right on the highest part of her cheekbone. Meanwhile, hairstylist Renato Campora added some flippy ends to Gomez's sleek, shiny bob.

Earlier this year, celebrity makeup artist Jenna Kristina gave Byrdie some insight into the Dark Rose Lip's reinstated popularity.
“With ’90s makeup trends making a comeback, we are seeing the resurgence of bolder and vampy lip looks, like the dark liner,” she explained. "The dark rose lip is a bold statement and is a beautiful way to tie together a look. It’s a great lip option for a night out and will have you feeling ultra confident.”

As for how to actually get the look, Kristina first and foremost recommends never skipping out on the lip liner—the more dramatic, the better. Outline your lips with your shade of choice before taking a small brush and "smudging" the product inward to help define the look.
Next, begin layering in your color gradient. When the shades are on, you'll use your brush to blend, and there you have it: a little gothic and a lot gorgeous.
