Key Takeaways

  • On April 10, Snif is launching their Milk & Cereal collection.
  • The nostalgic lineup includes a milky EDT, 2%, and three cereal-inspired body mists to layer with it.

I did not grow up in a sweet cereal household, which means that as an adult I will still take a bowl of Lucky Charms/Fruit Loops/Cinnamon Toast Crunch any time I'm offered one. Eating it makes me feel like I'm at a slumber party, and I love it.

Here's a question, though. Do you pour the milk first, or pour the cereal first? I've always been partial to the latter, but Snif is getting me to change my ways.

On Friday, April 10, the fragrance brand is dropping its Milk & Cereal Collection, which features a milky, cool Eau de Toilette dubbed 2% and a lineup of three body mists (that just happen to smell a lot like like the three elite cereals I mentioned above) to layer on top.

Keep reading to learn everything there is to know about the new scents, with insight served up straight from the people who created them.

The Inspiration

Snif takes pride in creating true-to-life, photorealistic fragrances. For example, Swede Tooth transports me right to a wall of pick-n-mix candy bins in Stockholm.

"It was important for us to nail the pieces that make each of these fragrances so realistic," Kara Kowalski, Director of Fragrance and Formula Development at Snif, and Bryan Edwards, Snif co-founder and co-CEO, tell Byrdie. "We literally tasted the cereal, smelled the cereal, and worked to capture both of those elements together. In some cases, the nostalgia came more from the scent than the flavor, and in others, it was the opposite."

Milky scents have been having a moment. According to Kowalski and Edwards, the Milk and Cereal collection came from wanting to push the brand's gourmand DNA in a way that felt "fresh and timely." (Thank goodness for that. Spoiled milk is never good.)

"We developed 2% as a photorealistic milk fragrance, inspired by the comforting, nostalgic feeling of milk and designed to feel clean, creamy, and skin-like rather than overly sweet," the duo tell Byrdie. "From there, the cereal concept naturally followed as a universal, emotional reference point that taps into childhood and self care. The layering piece was just as intentional—we wanted to create a system, not just a single scent. 2% acts as a versatile base that can be customized with the mists depending on your mood, making fragrance feel more personal, interactive, and approachable for everyone."

Because Snif wanted the finished product to stay as honest to its inspiration as possible, the details really mattered.

"Many milk fragrances lean ultra-luxe and creamy, but when we started developing ours, we noticed this unexpected watery quality," Kowalski and Edwards explain. "Staying true to details like that is what makes the fragrance feel real and believable. If it doesn’t smell exactly like the memory, we’re not done yet."

The Milky Base

No matter your cereal tastes, you're gonna need milk. That's where 2% comes in.

The brand describes the scent as "a milky, cool EDT that melts into a smooth, skin-like scent." It has notes of milk carton accord, fresh dairy, lactones, vanilla, praline, and caramel.

According to Kowalski, the fragrance is an homage to the small, simple, and maybe a little bit nostalgic rituals we find comfort in every day. Milk is so familiar, after all—doesn't everyone have a sunny memory involving ice cream, milkshakes, or just a cold glass of Horizon Organic sipped while watching cartoons on a weekend morning?

The first step of development was smelling different types of milk in the grocery store—and exploring what already existed in the market.

"We quickly realized there was no truly photorealistic milk. Milky fragrances often lean on notes like sandalwood and musk to create that creamy, close-to-skin effect, but we wanted to capture something more true-to-life," she says. For their take, Snif went with a fresh dairy accord and lactones to "really bring that authentic, creamy quality to life."

"It’s fresh, almost watery, with a creaminess that grounds it. But the milk carton accord is what makes it special. We wanted to bring a little Snif signature to the scent, and the idea came from reminiscing about drinking milk straight from the carton," adds the developer. "As the fragrance dries down, there’s a pop of ambrettolide mixed with aldehydes that creates this subtle, coated milk carton effect. I love it because it’s a playful nod to those nostalgic moments we have drinking milk."

The Cereal Lineup

The mists are equally thoughtful. "Sweet, airy, and playful," Lucky Streak revels in sweetness with notes of marshmallow (it's "sweet but still light and airy, a nod to those marshmallows that are crunchy at first but melt in your mouth"), heliotrope, corn starch, vanilla, and musk. Crunch Time is warm and indulgent with melted butter, cinnamon sugar, and brown sugar—an ode to the "cinnamilk" left behind at the bottom of your bowl.

Frooty Call is bright and juicy with a citrus twist, featuring notes of lemon sugar, strawberry, lime, and sandalwood.

"We realized that while Froot Loops smell fruity and citrusy, all the colors actually taste the same. So the top notes, lemon sugar, strawberry, and lime, reference both the scent and the visual color story of the cereal itself: yellow, red, and green," Kowalski and Edwards explain.

All three scents also include a note the brand finds extra special: "Cereal Accord."

"When we started smelling the actual cereals, we noticed this wheaty, mealy, almost grain-like quality that sits underneath the sugar. While they’re frosted, glazed, and sweet, what’s truly identifiable is that core 'cereal' scent, almost like a Cheerio. That became the foundation across the collection," the experts explain. "There are a lot of hidden 'easter eggs' throughout the fragrances, little details we intentionally build in during development. It ties back to the toyification of our brand. Like game makers adding secret levels or trap doors, we leave subtle breadcrumbs for the customer to discover as they wear and experience the scent!"

How They Fit Your Fragrance Wardrobe

Besides providing some pure, sweet-smelling fun, this collection is aligned with other things we're seeing in the fragrance space.

"Milk scents are having a major moment and feel like they’re here to stay. We’re seeing a shift away from heavier, overly sweet gourmands toward lighter, creamier, more skin-like scents, which is exactly what 2% delivers," add the experts. "At the same time, as we move into spring/summer, there’s always a natural return to brighter, punchier fruity scents—and the body mists were designed to bring that energy in a way that pairs seamlessly with the milk base, especially Frooty Call. It also speaks to the growing demand for comfort driven, nostalgic fragrance and the rise of layering, giving people an easy, customizable way to wear scent depending on their mood."

FYI: That mood will probably be great, if this is how you start your morning. The only way things could take a turn is if your bottle spills.

And if that's the case? Cry all you please! Anyone who's ever said there's "no use crying over spilled milk" never smelled 2%.

You can shop Snif's Milk & Cereal collection beginning Friday, April 10 at Ulta and snif.co.
