Byrdie
I tend to keep my skincare simple and affordable, but there's one brand I’m willing and eager to splurge on: Tatcha. Launched in 2009, the Japanese-founded brand is beloved among beauty editors, influencers, and everyday consumers alike, and for far more than its beautiful packaging. Its luxurious formulas deliver impressive results that live up to their price point, thanks to sensorial textures and ingredient lists rooted in Japanese botanicals. With the brand’s biggest sale of the year happening right now—the Friends and Family sale—I’m stocking up on all of my favorite Tatcha essentials (that are also approved by Byrdie testers) while they’re 20% off.
Even better news? Starting now, Byrdie readers have early access to the sale before it opens to the public with code “BYRDIE20”. The early access code will give customers 20% off (10% off create your own sets) and a gift with purchase if you spend $250 or more, which will not be available during the general sale. The general sale runs May 16-May 25, offering 20% off with code FRIEND26. Act fast and pick up favorites like a dewy, plumping moisturizer, a hydrating serum stick, and a brightening eye cream before the early access window closes.

Arguably, Tatcha’s most popular product, The Dewy Skin Cream, is a must-buy if you’re new to the brand or have dry skin that needs some radiance. Made with hyaluronic acid, red algae, and Hadasei-3 (a complex of twice-fermented rice, green tea, and algae), it helps hydrate the skin and plump and smooth fine lines. You’ll also find biomimetic squalane to help retain moisture and Japanese purple rice to help protect the skin from free radicals. Our tester, with combination skin, fine lines, and acne, says, “The cream leaves a bouncy and dewy texture (like the name suggests), and I absolutely love the way it leaves my skin feeling.”
New to Tatcha or not sure where to start? I recommend buying The Starter Ritual set. It’s a great way to try multiple products from the brand before committing to a full-size product. It comes with mini versions of The Dewy Cream, The Rice Wash, The Essence, and The Dewy Serum. Before the sale, it’s priced at $74 with a $102 value, which is already a great deal, but with the 20% off, you’ll save even more.
The Tatcha Serum Stick is one of the most handy, travel-friendly, efficient serums money can buy. You don’t have to worry about leaks or spills thanks to the solid stick formula, but it still hydrates, smooths the look of fine lines, and moisturizes like a liquid serum. A whopping 80% of the formula is squalane, an incredible moisturizer. Sunflower seed wax locks in the moisture, and Japanese rice bran supports skin barrier health. It’s a great serum to use before makeup, and you can even apply it over makeup for when you need moisture or glow on the go.
Once you start double cleansing, you won’t ever want to go back. The Tatcha Camellia Cleansing Oil removes makeup and sunscreen while simultaneously cleansing the skin of excess sebum and impurities. Our tester with dry skin appreciated its lightweight consistency and how delicately it removed makeup. It’s made with antioxidant-rich Japanese Camellia oil, nourishing rice brain oil, and Hadasei-3 to support the skin barrier.
Your skin will feel like, well, silk after using The Silk Serum. The formula contains a retinol alternative duo to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles; Hadasei-3, Tetrapeptide-4, and silk protein to help firm the skin; and diglucosyl gallic acid, which helps correct age spots. While Tatcha as a whole is an incredible skincare brand for mature skin, the Silk Serum in particular is especially beneficial.
We crowned the Tatcha Liquid Silk Canvas as our best overall primer for mature skin, but it works for anyone looking for a makeup primer that minimizes pores, smooths texture, and hydrates the skin. It’s formulated with silk powder, which extends makeup wear time, reduces shine, and blurs pores, along with silk extracts for hydration and moisture. “The application was very calming and soothing, and it instantly mattified my skin,” our tester says.
I’m a sucker for a luxurious, creamy eye cream, and the Tatcha Brightening Eye Cream delivers on all fronts. Dark circles and puffiness don’t stand a chance thanks to the 12-hour time-release vitamin C—which continuously brightens under-eyes throughout the day—bioferments, and Japanese plum. Plus, if you have hyperpigmentation under your eyes, encapsulated niacinamide and pro-glutathione antioxidant booster will help fade and brighten dark spots. Our tester said she saw results immediately, noting that it gave her a "refreshed, energized, awake look.” She was also pleased to find that her dark circles appeared less prominent after using it consistently.
This is one of my favorite lip masks, and not just because it looks so pretty on my nightstand. I’ve gotten my mom onto this, and now she can’t go to bed without slathering it on for smooth, soft, hydrated lips in the morning. It’s great to wear during the day as well if you prefer a thicker balm, as it imparts a glossy, glassy shine and subtle tint on the lips. Our tester also loved this lip mask, saying, “Immediately after application, I notice all of the dry, flaky areas of my lips instantly soften under its plush formula.”
While dry skin types should stick to The Dewy Cream, this pick is best for oily skin. The Water Cream is lightweight, airy, and soothing on the skin. I have oily skin and have tested it for myself, and can confirm it doesn’t feel greasy or heavy. It’s formulated with a BHA alternative to help minimize and smooth pores; Hadasei-3; glycerin for a boost of hydration; and wild rose and heartleaf for even more pore refinement.
Similar to The Brightening Eye Cream, Tatcha’s Brightening Serum has a 12-hour time-release vitamin C formula for continuous brightening effects throughout the day. And while vitamin C itself provides excellent antioxidant properties, Japanese plum, ferulic acid, and the pro-glutathione antioxidant booster in the serum enhance its antioxidant benefits. Our tester was impressed with the glow it gave her skin immediately after application, and noticed her dark spots had faded a bit after two weeks of use.
With warmer weather approaching, now is the perfect time to stock up on your sunscreen. Tatcha’s The Silk Sunscreen—a mineral sunscreen—has broad-spectrum SPF 50, is sweat-resistant, and is noncomedogenic. Aside from zinc oxide (which provides sun protection), it has niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and silk extract for even-toned, smooth, and hydrated skin.
