Victoria Beckham’s Latest Perfume Bottles Her Earliest Memories With David

On Wednesday, September 9, Victoria Beckham Beauty’s fifth fragrance and first Extrait de Parfum—Hotel Portofino—is arriving. Inspired by the brand’s beloved Portofino ‘97 scent, the new fragrance pays tribute to the same storied vacation while digging deeper into the iconic love story that came from it.

“It brings me straight back to that trip—the light, the hotel, the sea breeze and the excitement of being somewhere completely private together,” the Victoria Beckham told Byrdie when asked about the memories the new scent stirs in her. “I remember that time in my life like it was yesterday.”

The Inspiration

I’ll let Beckham herself tell you about what inspired the fragrance. Who better?

“Hotel Portofino takes me back to 1997, when David and I were first together and escaped to Portofino. We were keeping our relationship private, so that trip felt incredibly romantic and exciting!” the designer notes. “I wanted Hotel Portofino to capture that same feeling of falling in love, but in a deeper, more sensual and lasting way. I want the customer to feel confident and completely immersed in the moment when wearing this fragrance.”

The Fragrance

Hotel Portofino was created by Victoria Beckham and master perfumer Jérôme Epinette. At its top, you’ll find notes of bergamot, basil, and saffron. Middle notes include wild fig, agarwood, and pinot noir accord, and incense, papyrus, and black amber come in at the base.

Its vintage-inspired bottle mirrors the shape of Portofino ‘97, but this time its fluted and dressed in gold.

Beckham says she typically applies the fragrance to specific pulse points like her wrists and neck, but also loves to spritz a little through her hair.

“I like fragrance to feel intimate, something you discover when you’re close,” she notes.

Naturally, you should pair it with a beauty look befitting the Italian Riviera.

“For me, it’s all about fresh, glowing skin in the summer. I try to keep it quite effortless—a touch of concealer, our Cell Rejuvenating Illuminator, Colour Wash Bronze in Tanline, and a slick of tinted Posh Balm,” adds the icon. “The fragrance is always the final touch.”
