Key Takeaways

  • Westman Atelier launched their first liquid foundation, Suprême Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation, earlier this month.
  • Beauty writer Sophie Vilensky has been testing, and falling in love with, the skincare-forward formula.
  • Brand founder Gucci Westman told Byrdie everything there is to know about it, including the inspiration and how to wear it.

I am not a foundation girlie. In fact, I don’t love anything on my skin (save for very specific, lightweight sunscreens) when I’m not fast asleep. I’d rather redness, zits, and whatever else exist as they please than live with the discomfort of skin that feels covered in any sort of substance.

The good news, for me and for the many people who I’m sure have the exact same relationship with creams/powders/liquids of various viscosity covering their face, is that we’re living in an era of foundation optimization. Makeup and skincare have merged, and there are formulas on the market that do the work to conceal flaws while also making sure your skin doesn’t feel completely weighed down. Sometimes, it even feels better than normal.

My last few weeks playing with Westman Atelier’s new liquid foundation have proven this. At one point, I even found myself reaching for the silky smooth formula when I wasn’t leaving the house. I wanted to wear it for feelings sake, with no one around me to see what me and my skin were up to.

Ahead, Gucci Westman explains exactly how Suprême Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation (which is now available!) came to be.

The Inspiration

While the makeup artist always knew Suprême Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation would exist in her brand’s lineup eventually, it needed to be perfect before the day came. Just any liquid foundation wouldn’t do.

“When I launched Westman Atelier, I knew I wanted to create a liquid foundation, but I wasn’t willing to compromise on any of my expectations,” she shares. “It had to be truly exceptional, beautiful on the skin, with incredible wear, the right skincare technology with nothing unnecessary in the formula. I felt like that was missing from the market!”

She spent her time—years of it, in fact—searching for the “silky weightless feeling” that make the new launch so special.

“I wanted an air-light formula that blurs pores and sets to a natural, hydrated finish for coverage that looks impossibly real,” adds the expert. “We spent three years getting this complex right, and it was worth every second. The results you see and feel are not an accident.”

The Formula

Available in 30 shades, the foundation features a special Bio-Complex (a proprietary blend of peptides and vitamin B3) to jumpstart your skin’s natural renewal processes while smoothing, brightening overall tone, and firming. Amino acid-derived treatment pigments are also on hand to make sure coverage lasts while amino acid powders help blur, mattify, and absorb excess oil without drying you out.

There are no silicones or microplastics, but there is a special exosome technology that delivers actives to your skin exactly where it needs them.

“It’s not glowy, not matte, just real, and it looks like you, just on your best skin day ever,” says the makeup artist. “Your skin looks beautiful, but nobody can tell you’re wearing anything. It also has incredible skincare technology that actively improves skin over time.”

How to Use It

Westman likes applying the foundation right after she’s done with her skincare, while products are still fresh on the skin.

“That’s when the finish looks best,” she explains. “One pump onto the Liquid Foundation Brush or straight onto my fingertips, then I dab it into the center of the face and blend outward from there”

Though it’s up to you whether you choose to use your fingers or a brush, a brush is the artist’s go-to when she wants the most seamless results.

“The head is rounded and five-dimensional, so it gets into every nook and cranny of the face, giving you the precision of a brush with the blendability of a sponge,” adds Westman. “Even if you’ve never used a liquid foundation before, this one does a lot of the work for you.”

My Review

Since I already shared how very much I love this foundation, let me give you a more specific anecdote. I’ll tell you about the disgusting-percent-humidity night I wore Suprême Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation to a concert in a field.

Per usual, things started off strong when I applied it—with a brush, this time!—all over my face in my air-conditioned house. I topped things off with a little blush and highlighter, then hopped in the car and... completely forgot I was wearing anything at all until I looked in the mirror and saw my flawless face. Exactly how I like it.

The concert was long, and it was hot out, but once again I didn’t spend a second of my time in that field thinking about my face until the encore came and I happened to touch my cheek. It felt a little sticky, but not disgusting. Honestly, it felt just like skin? Living, breathing, skin that was perfectly fine existing under the stars on a toasty night.

The best part might’ve been the days following, though. Instead of waking up the next day with unhappy skin from being bogged down with pigments all night long (despite a good cleanse before bed!), my face felt completely normal. Better than normal, in fact—smooth, soft, and happy. It’s been a lovely month, stick nights included, and I can’t wait for many more to come with this bottle by my side.
